Cambridge team wins European human rights moot court competition

The Cambridge LLM human rights moot team recently competed in, and won the 2016 fourth edition of the ELSA Human Rights Moot Competition. Over 60 teams participated and the top 16 teams were selected for the oral round in Strasbourg at the European Court of Human Rights.

The team were the overall winners of the competition, mooting in the final in the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights in front of a full panel of 17 judges. In addition to the Council of Europe Award, they also received the prize for Best Applicant Memorial and Ciju Puthuppally received the Best Overall Orator prize.

The team consisted of four students from the LLM programme:

  • Ciju Puthuppally
  • Sinead Gleeson
  • Hazel Jackson
  • Sam Humphrey

The team were coached by Dr Kirsty Hughes and Stevie Martin (Faculty Teaching Associate).

The mooters will each receive a traineeship at the European Court of Human Rights. Ciju will also receive a traineeship at the Council of Europe Liaison Office with the European Union Brussels.

The team was kindly sponsored by the University of Cambridge Centre for Public Law.
