Speaker: Tony Smith, Victoria University of Wellington/Goodhart Professor
Location: Moot Court

The focus of the paper will be the emerging phenomenon of the ‘accredited’ journalist. Accredited by whom and for what purposes? Attendance at sensitive Family law proceedings, and even more worryingly for attendance at criminal trials from which the public is excluded. There are some interesting comparisons to be made with the position in USA—where a person has to be a journalist to claim the right to protect sources (see, e.g., the Judith Miller case), and where freedom of the press is explicitly protected by the constitution.

Faculty Members and Visitors, PhD students and LLM Public Law students are welcome.
