Speaker: Professor Jan-Werner Müller (Princeton University)

About the speaker: Jan-Werner Müller is Roger Williams Straus Professor of Social Sciences and Professor of Politics at Princeton University. His main research interests lie in democratic theory and the history of modern political thought. He is the author of numerous books, including most recently Street, Palace, Square: The Architecture of Democratic Spaces (2024) and Democracy Rules (2021). His 2016 book What is Populism? has been translated into more than 20 languages and his public affairs commentary and essays have appeared in the London Review of Books, the New York Review of Books, Foreign Affairs, The Guardian, the New York Times, and Project Syndicate.

About the series: the Dialogues on Democratic Resilience series organised in collaboration with the Centre for Public Law provides a platform for scholars, students, and members of the general public to examine the causes and dynamics of democratic decline and to explore strategies for strengthening democratic institutions. Interdisciplinary in scope, the series places particular emphasis on the role of law and legal institutions, investigating how they can both contribute to democratic erosion and function as vital safeguards against.
